Introduction
RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC) is located in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, and serves as an overseas branch campus of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD). Established in 1996 as Penang Medical College, RUMC was created to meet the demand for high-quality medical education in northern Malaysia. In 2018, it achieved university status from the Malaysian Ministry of Education, becoming the region's only Irish foreign branch campus.
RUMC offers a five-year undergraduate medical program. The initial 2.5 years of pre-clinical studies are conducted at RCSI or UCD in Ireland, after which students return to Penang for 2.5 years of clinical training in local hospitals. Graduates receive a medical degree from the National University of Ireland (NUI), recognized by both the Irish and Malaysian Medical Councils, and acknowledged globally.
In addition to the undergraduate program, RUMC offers a one-year Foundation in Science course designed to prepare students for medical studies. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), RUMC provides a four-year Malaysia-Ireland Training Programme for Family Medicine (MInTFM), aimed at training medical professionals aspiring to become family medicine specialists.
